Random question for those who work in the mental health field: I am teaching in a class on psychosocial supports. I am the lowest on the totem poll in the department and I am noticing a lot of problematic content in the course documents on somatization, hypochondriasis and conversion. As I read through all I can think is “the patients these theories are based on probably had hEDS” or any number of its diagnostic cousins (dysautonomia, ME/CFS, fibro, FND) and I am wondering if any other clinicians out there have any advice on how to breech the topic with my team. They preach listening to patient narratives but these ideas are far from what I hear in communities who live these symptoms.
